This year’s festival is dedicated to Sergei Parajanov, the legend of cinematic art in Ukraine.
One of the 20th century's greatest masters of cinema Sergei Parajanov was born in Georgia, his parents were Armenians. It was always unlikely that his work would conform to the strict socialist realism that Soviet authorities preferred. In 1964 Parajanov created «Shadows of forgotten ancestors» («Tini zabutyh predkiv»), a rhapsodic celebration of Ukrainian folk culture. This movie allowed the world to discover a startling and idiosyncratic new cinema talent.
One of the 20th century's greatest masters of cinema, Sergei Parajanov in the 1960s made two masterpieces in a row: «Shadows of forgotten ancestors» (1965) and Sayat Nova (1969). Both established him as a phenomenon with no analogy in the art world.
All the visitors will have a chance to watch Parajanov’s greatest movies on a big screen during the festival. In addition to Parajanov’s films there will be Wiz-art Lviv International Short Film Festival movie screenings, a big concert on August 24th, dedicated to the Independence Day of Ukraine and numerous masterclasses, discussion and lectures.
