«Boichukism» in Mystets’kyy Arsenal

One of the most anticipated art exhibition of the year, «Boichukism» in Mystets’kyy Arsenal in Kyiv is a retrospective of works by Ukrainian artists who formed a «boichukism» movement in 1910-1930 and became widely popular worldwide. Boichukism was formed by Ukrainian artist Mykhailo Boichuk and his students.
While in Paris at the end of the 1910s, Mykhailo Boichuk witnessed the birth of modern art and attempted to blend it with aspects of the Ukrainian tradition, developing a style of simplified monumental forms. In his compositions, surfaces are rhythmically integrated with lines. This style became known as Boichukism. Its followers made up a dominant part of the membership of Association of Revolutionary Art of Ukraine (ARMU), which was often attacked by official critics for ‘formalism,’ ‘bourgeois nationalism,’ and focusing on the countryside. After ARMU was disbanded and Boichuk was executed, most of his frescoes and paintings were destroyed, including those found in Lviv museums after the Second World War. Since then, however, several Boichuk’s works have reappeared. The principles of Boichukism were followed by a large number of admirers, who sometimes (eg, Nalepinska and Padalka) went on to create their own schools.

«My Mountains» Ceramics by Yuriy Musatov in Shcherbenko Art Center

Yuriy Musatov, ceramist from the younger generation, that has already established himself as the professional and worthwhile representative of the contemporary Ukrainian artistic ceramics, is reconsidering the traditional ways of working with ceramic. His creative works exist beyond the familiar categories or kinds of art – easel sculpture, interior ceramic. His objects are autonomic and self-sufficient in the artistic field. The artist applies the question of integrity of the person in the post-industrial society. The illusiveness of the modern world is represented in Musatov’s works, by the dreamy and subtle constructions, tender as lace, interweaving of the ceramic parts.

Imaginery Distances by Nazar Bilyk in Kyiv National Picture Gallery

Nazar Bilyk is a young artist from Ukraine who makes contemporary sculptures based on modern concepts and materials. Nazar Bilyk’s art can be defined as modern sculpture to the letter. Contemporary compositions and constructions, modern materials and present ideas behind his sculptures are essential to his work. The best aspect of Nazar’s art is that it will probably have a contemporary feel to it even in a few decades. He describes the sculptures as an inner dialogue of a man with himself.
He is also a creator of a stunning 6-foot tall sculpture called “Rain” (bronze and glass) in Kyiv. A huge raindrop stands suspended on the figure's face as he looks up toward the sky. The work has several meanings including representing man's delicate relationship with nature.
The new project Imaginery Distances has been created during 3 years and has been inspired by magical Cappadocia region in Turkey.
