Libretto for Christmas

“Libretto for Christmas” exhibition is a joint project of “Sophia of Kyiv” National Sanctuary and the Museum of Theatre, Music and Cinema Art of Ukraine. The visitors will see rare maquettes of the favorite holiday scene plays – “A Night before Christmas”, “The Nutcracker”, “Snow Queen”, “Twelve Months” and many other. Apart from maquettes, the exposition includes original theatre playbills, booklets, figures and musical instruments – all integral parts of a theatre performance. “Libretto for Christmas” exhibition presents works of Anatoliy Volnenko, Joseph Yutsevych, Anatoliy Petrytsky and many other well-known scene-designers. This exhibition is dedicated to that special feeling from childhood, when we are waiting for a miracle before holidays. Streets and buildings covered with snow look mysterious, and the interiors of old houses, old furniture and small household items hide pre-holiday atmosphere. The exhibition presents landscape and still-life paintings, interiors and scenography of Ukrainian painters of the second part of ХХ century. The visitors will see works of such masters as Mykola Gluschenko, Olexander Khvostenko-Khvostov, Oleksiy Shovkunenko, Sergiy Shyshko, Valentyn Reunov, Sergiy Poderev`yanskiy, Vladyslav Mamsykov, Vitaliy Kryzhanovsky and Anatoliy Petrytsky. Miracle Exists by Slava Zaymak

Slava Zaymak, a talented Kyiv painter and designer, the winner of Andy Warhol award for development of Ukrainian and world culture, is presenting his holiday series of art objects called “Miracle Exists”. On the exposition, visitors will see around 60 unusual works that help to dive into the atmosphere of New Year miracle, bright colors and deep emotions. In his works, Slava has used characters from Ukrainian fairy tales (fantastic animals, colorful flowers) in order to reflect his own view of endless cosmos.

Once Upon a Time There Lived New Year

This exhibition is dedicated to the history of New Year and Christmas holidays from the ancient times to modernity. The main idea is to open a portal to childhood in order to make visitors feel holiday mood, dreams and emotions of that time. The employees of museum contributed to the exposition, bringing old Christmas toys, postcards and other interesting things from their homes. The exhibition consists of ethnographic, pre-revolution, pre-war and post-war parts, presented in showcases and installations. The visitors can learn how holidays were born in Pagan times, how they have been changing after Christianization of Kyiv Rus, what were the difference between village and city holiday traditions, when Christmas tree became popular in Ukraine and how it was decorated starting from 1900.

All-Ukrainian Christmas Exhibition

The halls of the Central House of Painters in Kyiv traditionally present annual all-Ukrainian Christmas exposition.
