Walking on Velyka Zhytomyrska street in Kiev

This old street of the city is located in Shevchenkivsky district and goes from Mykhailivska to Lvivska square. You can find some interesting side streets and buildings while walking along Velyka Zhytomyrska street.

This is one of the oldest streets in Kiev. It appeared in the days of Kyievan Rus and was part of the way to Zhitomyr still in the eleventh century.

InterContinental Kiev 5-star hotel is located at the beginning of the street right close to St. Michael's Golden-Domed Monastery and square. The view from the hotel windows and terrace restaurant on the upper floor is really amazing.

You can observe Mykhaylivska and Saint Sofia square, Podil area with its St. Andrew Church as well as Velyka Zhytomyrska street.

If you continue your walk along Velyka Zhytomyrska you can see the old but still functioning fire station; there will be the start of Andriyivsky descent where you can buy souvenirs and paintings on the opposite side.

Unique, so called “doctor’s house”, constructed by architect Aleshin, is located on the street under number 17. During the soviet period the constructivism in architecture could provoke a lot of problems to any architect.

But Aleshin was brave enough and that building became outstanding masterpiece of soviet architecture and the article about it had appeared even in British Encyclopedia.

Then you can continue your way on Velyka Zhytomyrska street passing by some cafes, the side entrance to Peizazhna alley and some old but picturesque buildings.
There is an old House of Artists with statues on it at the end of the street.

Close to this place you can find 2-store red bus which is now a coffee shop. You can take coffee-to-go and have a rest in a small park located just close to the cafe-bus.

If you want to come back to the center, just drop into any trolley that goes to Maidan Nezalezhnosti. It will be the last stop of the trolley.
