Airlines News Digest: April 2018

This spring is eventful for all spheres of our life, and air travels are not an exception. In April 2018, Ukrainian mass media delights with announcements about the new flights of the famous companies such as WizzAir and Ryanair, building of a new big airport in Ukraine and negotiations with international lowcosters. Let`s consider these exciting news in more detail.

Volodymyr Omelyan, the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine, has recently stated that in 2018 a new regional airport will be constructed in Western Ukraine. The Ministry is currently considering two locations for its construction: Khust and Mukacheve towns. The representatives of the Ministry have already visited both sites and made some conclusions. As the Minister says, it is planned that the new airport will be ready to welcome the first travelers in the end of October 2018.

“Danylo Halytskyi” Lviv international airport has informed that it is going to present 17 new international airline routes during 2018. 12 new flights will be launched in spring and summer, and there are 5 more routes to come in autumn. Particularly, the famous Wizz Air launched flights from Lviv to Dortmund, Gdansk and Katowice in the end of March 2018. These flights take place twice a week. Starting from May 1, 2018, Wizz Air will also operate Lviv-London flight three times a week.

Italian company Ernest Airlines has announced flights from Lviv to Milan and Rome three times a week starting from June 22. Besides, another three airline companies presented new routes: Polish LOT operates flight to Olsztyn-Mazury from March 27, Ukrainian International Airlines invites to Barcelona twice a week starting from April 27, and Yanair will open new route to Batumi from June 8.
The great demand for already existing flights from Lviv made many companies increase frequency of operations. Austrian Airlines will operate flights to Wien 11 times per week, and Turkish Airlines offers flights to Istanbul 7 times per week. Ukrainian International Airlines welcomes to Lviv-Rome route twice a week. The number of flights from Lviv will also significantly grow in summer season due to air charter carriers. Travelers will be offered regular flights to Antalya, Sharm El Sheikh, Dalaman, Hurghada, Thessaloniki and Heraklion.
On April 6, Ryanair informed that flights from Boryspil airport will begin 2 months earlier than scheduled. The company started selling tickets for Kyiv-Berlin flight. Since the route had not been announced before, it was a great surprise. The tickets for the first Kyiv-Berlin flight are already available for booking from September 3, 2018.

However, the big breakthrough from Lviv and Kyiv to the West is scheduled for the end of October 2018. In this period, Ryanair, the leader of European lowcosters, will open routes to Dusseldorf, London, Memmingen, Warsaw and Krakow from Lviv and routes to Barcelona, Bratislava, Stockholm, London, Vilnius, Wroclaw, Warsaw, Krakow, Poznan and Gdansk from Kyiv.

Boryspil airport is currently engaged in negotiations with British lowcoster easyJet and German lowcoster Germanwings concerning route Kyiv-Berlin. The General Director of the airport, Pavlo Ryabikin, says that these negotiations have been progressing for two years already, and he stays optimistic about the upcoming results.
