Kiev Museum of Russian Art was opened on November 12, 1922 being called the Kiev Art Gallery. Originating from the difficult times of devastation and starvation after 1917 Revolution and Civil War, the museum has gone through all the stages of formation, restructuring, deprivation and loss in its development. It was a metaphorical ‘mirror’ of all the events, which took place in Ukraine during the Soviet Union historic period.

During the time of its existence, the museum has been consistently shaping the sections of the art of USSR that was an integral part of the common ideological and political propaganda. The positive outcome of this work is an extensive collection of works by many great artists from almost all the former Soviet republics, which are independent states now.
