Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians

The Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians are a part of the tri-national (Slovakia, Ukraine and Germany) property that also features the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany. The Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and the Ancient Beech Forests of Germany are a serial property comprising fifteen components. They represent an outstanding example of undisturbed, complex temperate forests and exhibit the most complete and comprehensive ecological patterns and processes of pure stands of European beech across a variety of environmental conditions. They contain an invaluable genetic reservoir of beech with many species associated and dependent on these forest habitats. Being a part of UNESCO World Heritage List, these undisturbed, complex temperate forests exhibit the most complete and comprehensive ecological patterns and processes of pure stands of European beech across a variety of environmental conditions and represent all altitudinal zones from seashore up to the forest line in the mountains.

Oleshky Sands

Oleshky Sands is the largest expanse of sand in Ukraine. Due to the local temperature and the amount of precipitation, these sands sometimes are qualified as a semi-desert. Oleshky Sands are situated inland from the Ukrainian coast of the Black Sea and consist of sand dunes that can reach a height of five meters. Despite the fact that this is the biggest sandy area of the European part of the continent, not many people are aware of this wonderful desert. Sandy array of dunes and hillocks is considered to be the National Natural Park in Ukraine only since 2010. The most comfortable seasons to come here are spring and autumn - in summer the temperature can reach 40 °C. Oleshky Sands reach 15km in diameter and are surrounded by a very dense forest, planted to prevent dunes moving. Although a relatively small sandy steppe, the Oleshky Sands have sandstorms.

Askania-Nova

Askania-Nova is a biosphere reserve located in Ukraine, within the dry Taurida steppe near Oleshky Sands. The reserve consists of a zoological park, a botanical garden and an open territory of virgin steppes. The sanctuary is located in a relatively remoted area: its territory completely overlaps the Askania-Nova municipality, which includes the main town and five more small rural settlements.
In addition to local species, Askania-Nova hosts ostriches, bisons, antelopes, wild horses, llamas, zebras and many bird species. More than 200 species of rare exotic plants were brought here from different parts of the world and planted in the dendrologic garden. The reserve is also very famous for giving a specious natural home to a group of Przewalski's Horses, the largest group kept in captivity.
