Shopping Out of the Malls: Creative Markets in Kyiv

Shopping Out of the Malls: Creative Markets in Kyiv

Where can you find vintage, exclusive, rare things or simply check out and buy from new emerging brands that will become the future of Ukrainian fashion in a while? The answer is obvious: flea markets! The recipe of popularity of this creative trend is simple. The beginners of fashion design are given an opportunity to present themselves, some receive a chance to get rid of old clothes and even earn on that, and others go there to upgrade their wardrobe for cheap.

Kyiv Market is held once a month in one of the most popular walking zones among both locals and tourists in the city center. It usually consists of a number of sections with various activities, food stands, clothing and accessories. In addition, you can spot young artists’ exhibitions and emerging musicians’ performances here or step by a cultural lecture or an artistic workshop.
Kyiv Market aims to develop the city, district and urban initiatives. It is more of a platform for communication and exchange, not exactly a flea market: each year, the event organizers undertake several social projects to support. What is more, Kyiv Market sticks to ‘made in Ukraine’ concept undertaking a challenge of presenting and popularizing young Ukrainian designers and startup shops.

Kurazh Bazar is the biggest monthly flea market in Kyiv, organized on the territory of a recently revitalized plant. The marketplace is divided into seven areas: clothing and shoes; jewelry and accessories; furniture; sports equipment; music and gadgets; children's area; and new fresh stuff. The key criteria for selection of the participants lays in interesting and unusual concept.
Kurazh Bazar gathers more than 500 vendors that represent two categories of goods – the ‘new’ and the ‘old’ ones. The ‘new’ are young Ukrainian brands, startups and shops. The ‘old’ are all second-hand and vintage goods in a good condition. The main goal of Kurazh Bazar is to revive the culture of jumble sales and create a place in Kyiv where you can find interesting, extraordinary, vintage or new things and clothes for the price of ‘one bottle of jam’.

Vsi Svoi

Going aside from the concept of a flea market, Vsi Svoi is a gathering of emerging and already established Ukrainian brands and companies. It is held during three out of four weekends of a month. Each weekend is dedicated to a certain direction: clothing, shoes and accessories; house and decoration; and goods for children. When Vsi Svoi is organized it looks less of a market, but more of a temporary shopping mall. The deal is that you will never find the stuff of their participants in regular shops and malls. Vsi Svoi is an amazing opportunity to explore the diversity, creativity, quality and style of Ukrainian producers.
