The Ultimate Guide to April Festivals in Ukraine

Springtime festivals and events in Ukraine come in all shapes and sizes, from traditional country feasts to world-class sporting events and quiet, intellectual affairs. What’s more, there’s something to suit all tastes and interests. «Destinations» gathered together a list of the most interesting spring festivals in Ukraine.

Kyiv Coffee Festival

The first weekend of April will fill Kyiv with strong coffee aroma. Kyiv Coffee Festival 3.0. will take place at Platforma Art Zavod on April 1st and 2nd, 2017. Kyiv Coffee Festival is brain child of the Ulichnaya Eda, the biggest Kyiv food festival. The event aims at introducing local coffee enthusiasts to the most recent trends in coffee industry, best Ukrainian coffee shops seasonal special offers. All the visitors will have a chance to attend the national Coffee championship.

Sakura Fest

Sakura Festival traditionally invites to the city of Uzhgorod to enjoy beautiful sakuras in bloom. The Cherry Blossom Festival will be held in Uzhgorod from April 18th to April 30th, 2017 and will celebrate the return of spring to the city.
It’s traditionally celebrated by picnicking with family and friends under the blossoming cherry trees. Flowers – and nature in general – are particularly symbolic throughout Japanese culture, and the cherry blossom represents both a new beginning and the fragility of life.

Easter in Shevchenkivsky Gai

Easter in Shevchenkivsky Gai folk festival will be happening over the Easter weekend of April 16th and 17th. Here you can discover authentic Ukrainian Orthodox Easter traditions, listen to the oldest Ukrainian Easter songs called «gayivky» and taste traditional Ukrainian Easter food («paska» festive bread, roasted sausages and traditional liquors). Shevchenkivky Gai is an open-air museum that displays different regional styles of farmsteads, windmills, churches and schools which dot a huge park to the east of the city center. Everything is pretty spread out here and a visit involves a lot of footwork.

Sakura Wine Festival

After you’ve enjoyed beautiful sakuras in bloom at the Sakura Fest in Uzhgorod downtown, head straight to Sakura Wine Festival taking place at the historical Sovyne Gnizdo (Owl’s Nest) estate. Sakura Wine Festival is not just a festival, it’s a whole movement, a community of passionate people committed to have some quality time with a glass of fine wine and exceptionally good food. Zakarpattya and Uzhgorod is a major winemaking area of Ukraine with many wineries and indie wine brands. They will gather together at the Sakura Wine Festival in order to discuss the latest trends in Unkarainian and international winemaking industry as well as offer their best wines to all the visitors.

Craft Beer and Vinyl Music Festival

If you are a beer enthusiast and happen to be in Lviv over the last weekend of April, don’t miss the Craft Beer and Vinyl Music Festival.
Showcasing specialty, seasonal and small batch beers from local, regional and national craft brewers, the centerpiece of the event is ticketed afternoon tasting passes where aficionados will be able to sample from more than 50 craft beers from over 20 brewers each afternoon.
The event will take place at iFest Republic (24-26, Staroznesens’ka street, Lviv) creative space, one of the best venues of this king in the city, offering a nice view over Lviv, the spacious outdoor terrace.

Of course, various on-line shops and e-bay would be the first option that come to mind, however, many would agree that browsing through stacks of old vinyls in crates before making the final decision has a certain magic music fans long for. Craft Beer and Vinyl Music Festival offers a unique opportunity to shop for some rare records and exclusive items.

Flugery Lvova (Lviv Vanes)

This is a well established and beloved by locals ethno-jazz festival in Lviv. The festival has been gathering all the jazz enthusiasts, musicians and singers in Lviv since 2003. Flugery Lvova (which can be translated as Lviv vanes) will be traditionally taking place in the inner courtyard of Lviv City Council, more commonly known as Ratusha, located on Rynok Square.
