National Art Museum of Ukraine in collaboration with Stedley Art Foundation presented the exhibition ‘Art of the Ukrainian Sixties’ on December 19, 2015. It has a major success among the audience as it the very first time in many years that the works of the most famous representatives of the Ukrainian Sixties generation are displayed under one roof.
Despite the fact that these artists worked in quite distinct, barely interconnected contexts, and their works were not exposed at the same exhibitions during artists' lives, this is a kind of an integral artistic phenomenon. It includes the works of 23 authors from Kiev, Kharkiv, Odesa, Lviv and Uzhhorod and once again opens a public discussion on the need for the Museum of Modern Art.
Soviet unofficial art as a forerunner of independent Ukraine's contemporary art is still not properly included in the historical and cultural narratives. The Ukrainian 1960s have been rather closely studied by researchers from different humanitarian spheres. Nevertheless, there is still neither distinct museum nor permanent exhibitions, which could unite unofficial artists from the different regions of Ukraine. Despite the isolation, which has defined the creative work of the 1960s, today it is not very difficult to detect the thematic, formal and ideological commonality of various artistic practices. To demonstrate this community, the exhibition demonstrates about 100 artistic works of the late 1950s - early 1970s, gathered around multiple semantic lines. Together they form a potential exposure of this period in the future Museum of Modern Art, temporarily located in the exhibition halls of the National Art Museum of Ukraine.
