Ray BLK
The British Council and Sentrum Club open the third year of Selector Live in Ukraine on March 31 (20:00) with Ray BLK, soul singer from South London and BBC Sound of 2017 winner. Selector Live aims at introducing new wave British music to wider audience and offers to discover talented musicians and singers from Great Britain.
Ray BLK didn’t a have a formal music education; she learnt it all by watching MTV Base and listening to Missy Elliott, Lil Kim and The Notorious B.I.G. Aged 13, she formed a band (New Found Content) with superstar producer MNEK. Fast forward to 2015, Ray released the song 50/50, which aired on BBC Radio 1Xtra’s playlist. In 2016, Ray self-released her debut mini-album Durt, featuring collaborations with Stormzy, Wretch 32 and SG Lewis.
She recently topped the BBC Sound of 2017 list – the BBC’s annual poll of music critics and industry reps designed to identify the most promising new artists. In previous years, 50 Cent, Adele, Michael Kiwanuka, Sam Smith, Years&Years and Jack Garrett have all been awarded the same accolade. BLK, her stage surname, stands for Building Living Knowing, which she describes as her three main values.
