Kyiv Lights Festival in May 2017

A very special event will be held in Kyiv this May in connection with upcoming Eurovision 2017. This is Kyiv Lights Festival – the first festival of lights and media art in Kyiv. For three days, from 12 till 14 of May, Ukrainian and foreign video artists will transform ordinary buildings in the center of Kyiv into huge screens with spectacular video projections to demonstrate the great power of modern technologies.

This festival format is new for Kyiv, though similar events have been successfully held in Berlin, Sydney, Jerusalem and other large world cities. The whole festival will take place in the old city center. The visitors` breath will be taken away by light sculptures and light installations, projected on buildings and trees on famous Andriyivsky Descent. The colorful light shows will be performed on the Pedestrian bridge not far from Poshtova square and on the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine on Mykhailivska square. The video-mapping show will be demonstrated on the building of the National Bank of Ukraine on Kontraktova square. All these performances together with the show of drones, live music and exhibition of modern Ukrainian painters will turn the city into an open-air art gallery. Kyiv Lights Festival will also present its visitors informative educational program on the subject of light performance technologies.

Though Kyivans have not seen a lot of laser shows in their city, they could enjoy one of such performances on French Spring Festival 2017 in Ukraine.

The competition of 3D-mapping and VJing with prize fund of 125 000 UAH will be the key performance of Kyiv Lights Festival. The competitors from various countries will present their works on the façade of river-boat station building near Poshtova square. During the competition, the artists will have to create a video projection on the building in the real time, accompanied by live DJ set. The projects of competitors will be judged by experienced international jury including Ricardo Cansado – well-known Brazilian VJ, director of Visual Brasil festival; Nicola Pavone – Italian programmer and designer of interactive media; Michiyuki Ishita – the head of Projection Mapping Association; Yanina Prudenko – the founder of Open Archive of Ukrainian Media Art; and Yuri Chornenky – marketing communication specialist of Kyivstar company, video and photo producer and musicain.
