New Ukrainian Music: April 2018 Review

A popular Ukrainian band Brunettes Shoot Blondes has recently won a prestigious Los Angeles Film Awards for the visuals in their ‘HIPS’ music video. Luckily, they’re not the first band to be internationally recognized: slowly but surely Ukrainian music invades streaming services like Spotify, where singers and bands gain millions of followers. Let’s see which hits have the local artists released lately.

Vivienne Mort

A delicate vocalist of the Ukrainian indie rock band Vivienne Mort has gone the long way from searching for the group members to gathering huge concert halls like October Palace in Kyiv. In 2010, Daniela Zaiushnika assembled a band Vivienne Mort that was instantly recognized by music critics and claimed the best mini-album of the year. Eight years later, Vivienne Mort keeps evolving and searching for the new sound, from folk melodies to harsher alternative rock. The new full album Досвiд (‘Experience’) is available on Spotify.
Okean Elzy

A band that needs no introduction, Okean Elzy is certainly the most well-known rock band in Ukraine and far beyond its borders. The charming vocal of frontman Svyatoslav Vakarchuk continues to astonish throughout the years, and emotionally charged songs have helped many people through their toughest times. On March 30, the band released a new single Без Тебе (‘Without You') along with the music video. It was shot in the USA, where Svyatoslav spent couple months for his studies at Stanford University.
Onuka

The new rising star of Ukrainian music, ONUKA performs a unique fusion of electronic music, traditional Ukrainian song motifs, and her own experimental elements. Her debut album, filled with charming sounds of trembita, sopilka, and bandura quickly climbed the iTunes chart in 2014, leaving Okean Elzy behind. Four years later ONUKA presented her second full album Mozaïka, already available on Spotify.

Ivan Dorn

The former member of Пара Нормальних band, Ivan Dorn has been steadily conquering pop charts of Ukrainian music. Lively electronic beats and cheeky lyrics made Dorn’s music one of the most often played in the clubs throughout the country. A new single that came out last month is a collab with Kazakh musician Moldanazar. The track available on Spotify is filled with beautiful sounds of two unique languages. Besides, Dorn has dropped a new music video 'Africa' suprising his fans.
Latexfauna

A dark horse of electronic music, Latexfauna started their career as a niche electro wave band mostly known to the lovers of the genre, and soon due to their pleasant melodies and vocals, appeared on the radio charts. In February this year the band released a single ALOE; and now it presents a new music video Дослідниця (‘Explorer’), full of sensual visuals and rich sound.

Один в Каное / Odyn v Kanoe

This indie band was formed in 2010 in Lviv. The musicians gave their first solo concert the same year and immediately engaged in a tour program, known as a group without studio recordings. The title, however, is left behind now — up to date, the band has a full debut album and a new 2018 single Iкони, available on Spotify as well.
Jamala

Last but certainly not least, a new single from the Eurovision 2016 winner Jamala. Those who follow the musician’s social networks know that she gave a birth of her first child at the end of March. Probably that’s why the song is so emotional, filled with ever-breathtaking vocal. The song is called Крила (‘Wings’) and is available on Spotify.
