About Exhibition
"Dendrochronology" or tree-ring dating is based on the analysis of annual growth rings. The exhibition brings together artworks from various cycles of the contemporary master's oeuvre, with their trademark phantasmagorical decorativeness and inventive use of materials.
“Annual tree rings, world history, hurricane Katrina, and the coiling chains of the DNA all have something in common, namely, an incessant spiral development pattern. The magical lasso with which the Gods rule the Universe. Dendrochronology is a life chronicle of its annual hoops, its tabooed apple tree, its Yggdrasil in whose lofty branches Simurgh builds his abode”, shared artist Leonid Bernat.
“The scratched vinyl of life situations, in both their ridiculousness and perfection, and an assemblage of simple objects. A setlist, which has absorbed different genres and emotional states, different rhythms, which engender their own rotations — waltz, twist, rock-n-roll, backspin… This is life, in its ceaseless inspired dervish-dance.”
In the words of the gallery director Myroslava Hartmond, “the Triptych gallery has been well-acquainted with the work of Leonid Bernat for many years. The ‘DENDROCHRONOLOGY” art exhibition in Kyiv includes many of the talented artist’s works that were once presented here for the first time. One of my favourite projects in the gallery’s thirty-year history, ‘ANAHATA’, included several of Leonid’s pieces that tackled the subject of Soviet nostalgia with both irony and compassion, while their innovative technique that combined gesso, printing, and stencilling is carved in the memory. Among the ‘annual rings’ of Leonid Bernat’s extensive portfolio we see many such successful experiments. This festive retrospective gives us the chance to conduct a scientific analysis of this mighty oak of the Ukrainian art scene.”
