For their annual international concert tour, the award-winning male choir from Basel (Switzerland) travels to Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. Performing in Chernihiv and in Kyiv, the young choristers will pay tribute to the great masters of German romanticism with a concert series titled “HELDEN”.The centrepiece of the program consists of the two cantatas "Rinaldo" by Johannes Brahms, and "Leonidas" by Max Bruch, both of which exemplarily convey classical heroism. The program will be rounded off with "Bogoroditchen", an orthodox Marian hymn composed by the choir’s vice-director David Rossel and "Das Glück von Edenhall".
This ballad, by Robert Schumann, is a strong reminder that heroic pride comes before the fall. The choir is honoured to give concerts in Chernihiv and Kyiv in collaboration with the Academic Symphony Orchestra “Philharmonic” (Chernihiv) and the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the National Philharmonic of Ukraine (Kyiv).
The Männerstimmen Basel were founded 10 years ago by former singers of the Knabenkantorei Basel (Boys’ choir Basel). Their appearance is deliberately old-fashioned: clothes from the 20s, Knickerbockers, suspenders, corduroy jackets. However, they are a bunch of young lads who are dedicated to mastering great choral music.
Impressing competition juries at home and abroad, the Männerstimmen Basel have won, among others, the Men's Choirs category at the World Choir Games in Cincinnati (USA), and received the prize for the best interpretation of a contemporary work in Cork (UK) at the Fleischmann International Trophy Competition. At the Choral Festival Cracovia Cantans in Krakow (PL), the Männerstimmen Basel were given the Grand Prix for the Best Choir of the festival, and were also awarded first place among male choirs.
