May 2018 Kyiv City News

While the capital of Ukraine is wrapped up in at least three celebrations from the VE Day to EUFA Champion Language Final, this month is even more eventful than it might seem. Urban changes and new projects are approved almost daily, and many of them will affect daily life in Kyiv. Let’s have a look.

Firstly, there’s hardly anything as influential in Kyiv as traffic. That’s why the new traffic flow scheme on Podil is one of the things one might be interested in. Since May 1, Kontraktova Ploshcha became even more accessible to pedestrians: the square in front of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy is now a pedestrian-only zone.

Up to date, the following streets are now one-way for transport: Kostiantynivska, Khoryva, Hryhoriya Skovorody, Illinska. According to the Kyiv City Department of Transport Infrastructure, the newly-installed 340 road signs and 2 traffic lights will make the shift easier for the drivers and reduce the level of traffic jams in the area.

The second stage of the plan is a re-organized traffic flow on Andriivska Street and access to Borychiv descent, which will increase the capacity of Poshtova Square.
parking
To go on with the changes for drivers, 5 new parking lots will be built near metro stations to give enough space for the city drivers. The parking lots with the capacity of 600-700 cars will appear on Lisova, Chervony Khutir, Syrets, and Teremky metro stations. Moreover, starting September 27 the fine for illegal parking will increase. The driver will have to pay UAH 255 for violating parking rules.

cruise
Another entertainment change connected to water concerns cruises on the Dnipro River. The organizers of the cruises have announced the purchase of several new high-speed boats Nevka-6. The new vessel is more stable and advanced compared to the boats used previously by the companies. One of the main advantages of the new vessel type is resistance to the category 3 storms.

The new routes are to be announced, yet the cruise organizers hint they will start with the well-known directions: Kyiv, Kaniv, and Mezhyhiria.
skyway
Finally, Kyiv City Administration began a daring technological project on building overground transport line to Troyeshchyna. The ambitious engineering group plans to implement high-speed transport system Sky Way from Poshtova Square to Troyeshchynsʹkyy Rynok. Sky Way works akin to a magnetic levitation train that goes up to 500 km per hour and looks like something from cyber-punk movies. However, the project may be implemented in Kyiv quite soon.
