United Front

KYIV — On September 9, in the run-up to the upcoming Crimea Platform summit, key Ukrainian officials hosted a briefing for ambassadors and diplomatic representatives from more than 30 nations. Diplomats from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, France, and Germany were in attendance, as were representatives from international organizations including the UN, OSCE, NATO, and the European Union.

Ukraine anticipates an unprecedented level of participation at the summit, which is expected to take place in September. Officials hope the high-level attendance will demonstrate the international community's unified stance and unwavering resolve to counter Russian aggression.

Focus on Human Rights and Russian Repression

The briefing was opened by several prominent Ukrainian figures:
● Olha Kuryshko, Permanent Representative of the President of Ukraine in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea
● Ihor Zhovkva, Deputy Head of the Office of the President
● Oleksandr Korniienko, First Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada
● Serhii Kyslytsia, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs
● Mustafa Dzhemilev, leader of the Crimean Tatar people

Deputy Head of the Office of the President, Ihor Zhovkva, emphasized that the Crimea Platform remains a crucial tool for protecting human rights and combating Russian disinformation. He highlighted that the humanitarian dimension of the upcoming summit must focus on Russia's illegal sentences, child abductions, and repression of the Crimean Tatar people.

Speaking at the event, Permanent Representative Olha Kuryshko stated, "Russia is escalating the scale of repression in the temporarily occupied territory of Ukraine, directing more and more resources toward the systematic destruction of Ukrainian identity. The occupiers are not only persecuting activists, journalists, and representatives of Ukraines indigenous peoples but are also inventing new accusations to expand the scope of their illegal persecutions."

Mustafa Dzhemilev underscored the urgency of the situation, warning that "the very existence of the Crimean Tatar people will be threatened if Crimea is not de-occupied."

Participants also discussed Russias illegal actions, including the forced issuance of Russian passports and the militarization of children and youth, which are gross violations of international humanitarian law. There was a strong consensus on the need for increased pressure on Russia through international institutions and expanded sanctions. The briefing also featured two exhibitions: one documenting the destruction of religious and cultural sites and another showcasing the work of two Crimean Tatar artists.

Officials urged international partners to leverage their influence to attract the widest possible range of participants, particularly from the Global South, to demonstrate the universal principles upon which the Crimea Platform is founded.
