Latvian Embassy in Ukraine invites everyone to celebrate traditional Latvian fest – Janiv Day – on June 18, 2016 at the National Museum of Folk Architecture and Life of Ukraine in Pyrohiv (Pirogovo).
Yaniv Day or Midsummer is celebrated in Latvia on the night of June 23-24 according to ancient traditions of their ancestors. On the longest day and the shortest night of the year Latvians usually go out in town, weave wreaths, sing, dance and have fun until the morning. It is believed that herbs gathered on this night have healing powers. On Yaniv Day Latvians decorate their homes with different branches of trees, flowers and herbs to scare away the evil spirits. And one of the most famous traditions on this night is jumping over the fire to clean body and soul. The Ukrainian equivalent of this fest is Ivana Kupala that has similar rituals and traditions. Therefore, during the celebration we can find parallels between our cultures.
The program of the event will feature concert of the dance group from Latvia "Dārta", virtuoso performers Laima Jansone and Olafs Okonovs, Latvian rock band "Green Novice" and Ukrainian folk band "Pravytsya" .
