British Program at Book Arsenal 2017 in Kyiv

In 2016, British Council in Ukraine started its cooperation with International Birmingham Literature festival (England) and established “3x3” residential program for Ukrainian writers. This year Birmingham Literature festival will become the first foreign organization presenting its Alternative Albion curatorial project in the context of VII Book Arsenal festival 2017 in Kyiv.

The aim of the project is to present British reading practices and writing culture to Ukrainian audience at Book Arsenal festival. The program events will take place on 18-21 may 2017 on the territory of Mystetskyi Arsenal and not only. Jonathan Coe, a famous prosaic, is the honored guest of the project. Jonathan Davidson, the director of Birmingham Literature Festival and Writing West Midlands organization; Stuart Maconie, a publicist, a radio presenter and a journalist; Kit de Waal, a writer; Cat Weatherill, a childrens` writer; and Alan ‘Kurly’ McGeachie, a poet, will also visit Kyiv to take part in Alternative Albion. In such way Ukrainian readers will be able to discover the brightest authors of West Midlands region. Each of these authors has a unique alternative approach to literature.

The program of Birmingham Literature festival at Book Arsenal 2017 includes a plenty of events:
• roundtable discussion “Alternative Albion: the modern literature of Great Britain”;
• public interview with Jonathan Coe “Unveiling a secret of literature character and keeping the privacy of a real person”;
• open discussion “A child telling a grown-up`s story: (non)scary fairytales with Kit de Waal;
• discussing the Joseph Conrad Korzeniowski book “Heart of darkness” by British Book Group reading society;
• workshop “Wild Magic: Magic stories from the whole world” with children`s writer Cat Weatherill for the families with kids aged 5 to 10 years;
• lecture “Literature and British pop music”, which will help to understand tendencies and peculiarities of modern British music, presented by a writer, a researcher and BBC radio presenter Stuart Maconie; and also his public lecture in Radio Aristokraty studio;
• open-air poetic performance from a British poet Alan ‘Kurly’ McGeachie near the entrance of Arsenalna subway station.

Jonathan Davidson, the director of Birmingham Literature Festival and Writing West Midlands organization, will perform a special lecture called “Promotion of the new writing in Great Britain: the most interesting cases” for Ukrainian cultural workers.
very interesting “Kyiv Stories” project is waiting for for British guests at Book Arsenal festival 2017. The British delegation will experience a real expedition to Kyiv in order to feel the original spirit of Ukrainian capital. Essays, notes and photos, taken by British authors, will become a part of alternative Kyiv guidebook.
