For Ukrainians Christmas is the most important family holiday of the whole year. It is celebrated solemnly, as well as merrily, according to ancient customs that have come through the ages and are still observed today.
Despite the fact that most Ukrainians belong to the Eastern Orthodox Church and follow the Julian calendar (celebrating Christmas on January 7th), there are many Ukrainians (mostly in Western Ukraine) who celebrate Christmas on December 25th in accordance with the Roman Catholic tradition (Gregorian Calendar). In 2017 Ukrainian Parliament declared December 25th (Catholic Christmas) the official day off in Ukraine, just as January 7th (Orthodox Christmas Day).
