The theater was established in 1920 in Vinnytsia as the Vinnytsia Theater of Franko. It moved to Kiev only in 1926 after being located in Kharkiv for some time. Since that time the theater hasn’t stopped surprising the audience: each of its performances is a separate world fulfilled with originality of artistic decisions. However, all the performances are united under a common umbrella of the notion of true spirituality. The National Franko Theater’s priority is ‘the life of the human spirit’.

Lesya Ukrainka National Academic Theater of Russian Drama

The Lesya Ukrainka National Theater, founded in 1926, produces many important plays of Russian and Ukrainian dramatic art. This repertoire is complemented with plays from famous foreign authors. The theater is going along with time and catches modern tendencies. Its program is rich and suits all the tastes: drama, comedy, contemporary performance and mono-plays on the small stage, classic plays and works of modern emerging authors are all represented here.

The Kiev Academic Theatre of Drama and Comedy occupies a special place among other theatres of Ukraine. The Theater was created as a response to the democratic changes in Soviet (and Ukrainian) society in the late 1970s. It is now widely known and popular among spectators as well as influential inside of specialists and critics circles. An innovative approach to stage adaptation of Ukrainian classics helped the Drama and Comedy Theater to break strong stereotypes about traditional Ukrainian drama.
