Japan – Ukraine: Dialog Festival in Kyiv

2017 was announced as the year of Japan in Ukraine. This year Ukrainians organize many thematic events to appreciate Japanese traditions, history and art as well as to get familiar with modern Japan. “Japan – Ukraine: dialog” festival in Kyiv, held in Dukat art gallery, is one of such events. This festival will help to learn a lot of interesting things about old and modern Japanese culture.

“Japan – Ukraine: dialog” festival in Kyiv is supported by Directorate-General for Rendering Services to Diplomatic Missions and Embassy of Japan in Ukraine. The festival exhibition presents Japanese sculptures and netsuke figures from private collections. Guests are welcome to see beautiful classic works of Japanese masters of engravings, such as Katsushika Hokusai and Kitagawa Utamaro; the works of famous Ukrainian graphic artists; original editions with illustrations of Anatoliy Petritskiy, Vasyl Sedliar, Georgy Narbut. Special attention should be paid to the works of Ukrainian avant-gardist David Burliuk. He was one of the first European artists, who brought futurism to Japan. In 1920-1922, David Burliuk organized series of modern art exhibitions in Tokyo, presenting works of eminent Kazimir Malevich and Vladimir Tatlin.

“Japan – Ukraine: dialog” festival will impress visitors with fashion show of well-known Ukrainian designer Fedor Vozianov. The collection of vintage Japanese kimonos, designed by Tetyana Vovk, and origami-inspired jewelry by Tetyana Chorna will definitely charm the guests. The exposition will also present PortraitCoat project – a unique collection of kimono coats decorated with hand embroidery, created by painter Anastacia Poderev`yanska and designer Lilia Bratus`. Musical program of “Japan – Ukraine: dialog” is notable for fascinating mix of bandore and Japanese flute performed by Roman Grynkiv and Un Ryuu. The event will also delight visitors with diverse film shows, master-classes, lections and discussions.

3 May, 18:00 – lection of designer Eugeniy Sheshenin “Avant-garde in fashion: Japan. Tradition as the base for original design concept”;
4 May, 18:00 – lection of designer Eugeniy Sheshenin “Ecosystem of Japan street fashion: independent designers, traders and media”;
5 May, 19:30 – film show “The woman in the dunes”;
6 May, 16:00 – conference “Ukraine-Japan: perspectives of cooperation”.
