Shcherbenko Art Centre is an artistic space, engaged in exhibition activities, which also works as a venue for lectures, round tables, workshops with leading masters of modern art from Ukraine and other countries. The task of the centre is to create opportunities for dialogue between the art world and the general audience.

Author of the project, Dr. Sungtae Jung, came to Pripyat to carry out an artistic study of situation of the tragically known town and its inhabitants, as well as the catastrophe in general, its consequences and traces: “This strange city attracted me over to itself that for the memories buried in my subconscious for thirty years. And I found me breathing with them at the gray boundary of social happenings after I had got out of my really private life”.
Through “Breath in Chernobyl” project, Dr. Sungtae Jung introduced his own photo-story of our common tragic past touching fates of specific people who left their native home... and came back. This story is about life and death and the subtle line that unites them. This story, lasting already for thirty years, has no plot and dynamics. However, this makes it even more impressive. In the two series of photographs – “Pripyat” (pictures of abandoned wards, corridors, rooms) and “Samosely” (portraits of elderly people who returned to their native home to live out their last days) - time seems to fade. Nevertheless, this is the way to understand that time does not spare anything and anyone“ (Maryna Shcherbenko, the curator of the project).
“Breath in Chernobyl” exhibition in Kiev will be held until May 7, 2016.
