Traditional energy assets
The territory’s largest power generating asset is PJSC "DTEK Dniproenergo" (a subsidiary of SCM Group). It comprises three thermal power plants (TPP): DTEK Prydniprovska TPP in Dnipro, DTEK Kryvorizka TPP in Dnipro Region's Zelenodolsk and DTEK Zaporizka TPP in Zaporizhia Region’s Enerhodar. Their combined rated capacity stands at 8,307 MW. "DTEK Dniproenergo" currently invests in overhauling and upgrading the TPPs, which still mainly run on coal, fuel oil and gas.
Not far from Zaporizhia TPP in Enerhodar stands Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Station, the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine "Energoatom" facility. Its rated capacity stands at 6,000 MW makes the station the largest such operation in Europe.
There are also Dnieper Hydroelectric Station (DniproHES) with 1,569 MW rated capacity in Zaporizhia and Middle Dnieper Hydroelectric Station (352 MW) in the town of Kamianske, Dnipro Region.
Also represented in the aforementioned regions are major power generation and co-generation facilities such as Zmiivska TPP in the settlement of Slobozhansky, Kharkiv Region (2,175 MW rated capacity, owned by PJSC "Centrenergo"), the central heating and power plant (CHPP) owned by ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih (274 MW), Kremenchuk CHPP in Poltava Region (255 MW, Poltavaoblenergo), Dniprovska CHPP in Kamianske (246.4 MW, Dnipro CHPP) and Kharkiv CHPP 5 in the village of Podvirky, Kharkiv Region (240 MW, Kharkiv CHPP 5).
All these run on coal or gas and, together with "DTEK Dniproenergo"’s facilities, account for a third of all the Ukrainian TPPs’ and CHPPs’ combined rated capacity.
Local leaders of renewables
The most important alternative energy project in Zaporizhia Region is the DTEK Priazovsky wind farm complex currently under construction by SCM Group. It will comprise three facilities: the Botievo, Prymorska and Berdyansk wind power farms. Priazovsky will have a combined rated capacity of 500 MW, including 200 MW for Botievo and 150 MW each for Prymorska and Berdyansk.
The Botievo wind farm has already entered operation near the village of Prymorsky Posad in Zaporizhia Region. It is Ukraine’s most powerful wind farm and one of the five largest overland wind power plants in Central and Eastern Europe. The project to build Botievo cost over 350 million euros. SCM Group expects its total investment in DTEK Priazovsky to amount to nearly 900 million euros.
In the village of Starozavodske, Dnipro Region, DTEK is working with the China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to build Ukraine’s most powerful solar power station with a rated capacity of 200 MW. This will be one of Europe’s three largest such facilities, and will provide electricity for 100,ooo households. The project is valued at $282 million.
Another solar power station, with 50 MW, rated capacity, is under construction by Tokmak Solar Enegry in the town of Tokmak, Zaporizhia Region. The first stage of the facility, at 11 MW rated capacity, was put into service in the spring of 2018. Once completed, the plant is expected to supply electricity to six districts of the region, including resorts on the Sea of Azov coast.
Green solutions
In Kharkiv Region, the year 2015 saw the creation of an energy cluster uniting nearly 50 companies specialising in renewable power generation. The project was jointly implemented by the regional administration, Kharkiv city council and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland. The cluster oversees all the major regional green-energy initiatives.

Stanislav Ihnatyev, the founder of the Kharkiv energy cluster, says its member companies have installed solar panels generating a total of 10.4 MW, including 2.7 MW on the roofs of private houses. The most peculiar such solar farm, at 1 MW capacity, is installed on a stabilised landslide site in the village of Cherkaska Lozova in Derhachi District. At Kharkiv’s Rohan landfill, a 2.2 MW facility was launched in February 2018 to produce electricity from biogas. Kharkiv Tobacco Factory runs a 4.5 MW boiler house which uses locally produced sunflower seed pallets instead of imported gas. A biogas power plant under construction in the village of Rohan, Kharkiv Region, will be commissioned in 2019 at 6 MW rated capacity. All the above projects are being supported by Ukrainian investors.
The agroindustrial holding company Astarta has built a bio-energy facility on the premises of its sugar factory in the town of Hlobyn, Poltava Region. The facility processes bagasse into biogas. The factory reduced consumption of natural gas by 9% and electricity consumption by 5% in 2017 thanks to the use of biogas.
