September 3 is a start for many things in Ukraine: for school kids and university students it’s a beginning of the new academic year. For Ukrainian aviation, it’s a date of the first Ryanair Kyiv – Berlin flight. As mentioned before by the low-cost airline, the flight will depart from Boryspil International Airport and arrive at Schönefeld Airport, located in 18 km from Berlin. The flight will be operated four times a week.
As more and more airlines enter the Ukrainian market, the passenger flow in the main airport of the country, KBP International Airport, continues to grow. According to the Boryspil press center, 1 million 327.2 thousand passengers went through the airport in August 2018. The airport also increased its total passenger flow from January to August 2018 by 17.1% compared to the same period last year. The total number of passengers reached 8 million.
Good news for those who live in Kyiv and often use IEV Zhuliany airport. Starting August 2018, the airport can be conveniently reached from the Central Railway Station by trolleybus #9. The route Igor Sikorsky International Airport — Palats Sportu Metro Station was modified for the convenience of passengers.
According to the Minister of Infrastructure of Ukraine Volodymyr Omelyan, two more international airlines will enter the Ukrainian market this year. While the Minister hadn’t yet announced their names or a certain date, he hinted that the flights would start at the end of the year or in 2019.
New flights & rules
Hungarian low-cost airlines WizzAir continues to bring good news for Ukraine. On August 30, the company announced five new flights from Ukraine to various destinations in Europe. Three of the flights will depart from Kyiv to Billund (Denmark), Bremen (Germany) and Riga (Latvia). The other two flights will operate from Lviv and fly to Copenhagen (Denmark) and Frankfurt-Hahn (Germany). The flights will be launched starting from March 2018, and Lviv - Frankfurt-Hahn will already be available in December 2018. Kyiv – Riga will appear in the timetable three times a week, while the rest will be operated two times a week.
It’s necessary to mention that while WizzAir opened new flights, the flight Kyiv – Lublin will cease to exist starting from October 24. The low-cost airlines also updated their luggage policy. Now, only passengers with WIZZ Priority will be able to bring their hand luggage into the cabin. Passengers may travel with one free piece of hand luggage of maximum size 55 x 40 x 23 cm. In case you buy WIZZ priority, you can take your hand luggage and one additional small bag (40 x 30 x 18 cm) into the cabin.
Ryanair followed the updates and introduced new rules in their luggage policy as well: starting November 1, non-priority customers who wish to bring a second larger wheelie bag, maximum of 10kg, must purchase the 10kg Check-in Bag for €/£8 if purchased during the initial flight booking, or €/£10 if added online after booking up to 40 minutes before the scheduled flight departure time. Make sure to measure your luggage before booking flights.
