Besides, the program will feature English-language lectures delivered by the top Swiss photography personas: Director of the Photographic center of Geneva Joerg Bader and Curator or the Fotostiftung Schweiz Sascha Renner.

On November 2, Joerg Bader and Sascha Renner will hold lectures as well as Q&A sessions.

Joerg Bader, Photographic center of Geneva, director

Joerg BaderBorn 1955 in Zurich, artist, art critic, author, publisher, teacher and exhibition curator Joerg Bader lives and works in Geneva and Belo Horizonte. Director of the Geneva Photography Centre (CPG) since 2001, Mr. Bader considers himself an artist and critic who finds visual, written, radio, editorial and curatorial forms.

He has organized over 80 solo shows and around 20 thematic exhibitions, including DE CORAZ(Ò) in 1999 at Tecla Sala in Barcelona, REPRÉSENTATION DU TRAVAIL/TRAVAIL DE REPRÉSENTATION in 2003, PHOTO-TRAFIC in 2006, LA REVANCHE DE L’ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHIQUE in 2010, fALSEfAKES in 2013 and CAMÉRA(AUTO)CONTRÔLE in 2016, all at CPG, OPEN FRAME I & II at C.R.A.C. in Sète in 2011 and L’ANGE DE L’HISTOIRE at the Centre d’art Contemporain Walter Benjamin in Perpignan in 2014.

Lectures

Joerg Bader will talk about the The Revenge of the Photographic Archive. According to Baden, LA REVANCHE DE L’ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHIQUE goes beyond the framework of a conventional exhibition of photographs. It offers not only a broadening outside the field of contemporary art, by including stances reflecting political militancy, anthropology or photo-reportage, and also showing photographic productions from the most varied points of view, giving prominence to methods of presentation that are not restricted solely to vintage prints mounted behind glass and with a cardboard mat.

The lecture will take place at 3 P.M. Q&A panel will be held at 4 P.M.

The second lecture delivered by Joerg Bader will explore the CAMÉRA(AUTO)CONTRÔLE exhibition. The exhibition is the core of the 50JPG (50 Days for Photography in Geneva) triennial. CAMÉRA(AUTO)CONTRÔLE takes the viewer right into the burning topic of drones and other monitoring systems that use photographic and video surveillance cameras. The project explores the ever-present cameras through the eyes of the number of artists, hackers and political activists who refused to smile, instead appropriating the surveillance devices.

The lecture will take place at 6 P.M. Q&A panel will be held at 7 P.M.

Sascha Renner, Curator and Critic living in Zurich. Deputy Director of the Fotostiftung Schweiz

Sascha RennerBorn 1973, lives in Zurich. Since 2012 Director of the COALMINE Forum for Documentary Photography, Winterthur. Since 2016 curator and head of communication, since 2018 deputy director of the Fotostiftung Schweiz. Studies in art history and ethnology at the University of Zurich (M.A.). 2001-2013 art editor and critic at the daily newspaper "Tages-Anzeiger" and Swiss public radio "SRF 2 Kultur". 2015 scholarship for art education of the city of Zurich. His interests lie in the fields of storytelling, curating photography and visual cultures.

Lecture and Q&A

Sascha Renner raises the topic of photographic institutions today: are they exchangeable or relevant?

The founding of the Fotostiftung Schweiz in 1971 was a pioneering act: it is one of the oldest institutions in the world dedicated to the medium of photography, its history and its significance in our time. Its archives and collections comprise over 50 photographic estates and over 1 million original and archival prints, negatives and slides which are presented through exhibitions and publications. Today, however, photography has become an integral part of the exhibition program of art galleries and museums. In this lecture Sascha Renner will present the practice of the Fotostiftung Schweiz and examine the question of how (national) institutions dedicated to photography can make a difference, create social relevance, initiate discourses and fulfill their various tasks in a complex socio-political environment.

The lecture will take place at 4.30 P.M. Q&A panel will be held at 5.30 P.M.
