The theme chosen for 2017 is "Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums". The objective of International Museum Day is to raise awareness of the fact that, “Museums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.”
Participation in International Museum Day is growing among museums all over the world with Lviv being no exception. In 2017 the events and activities planned by local museums to celebrate International Museum Day will last for a whole week.

During this week Lviv museums invite all the visitors to attend their expositions either free of charge or offering tickets with significant discounts. All major Lviv museums have joined the celebration of International Museum Day. Lviv National Historical Museum prepared a special exhibition dedicated to the history and culture of various ethnical groups residing in Lviv from the time of its foundation; Lviv National Art Gallery invites to explore the treasures of Pidhoretsky Palace; The History of Religion Museum invites to attend guided tours and special exhibition dedicated to the Jewish history of the city.
